What is MK Hogwatch?
The Parks Trust’s Biodiversity and Outdoor Learning Teams are calling you to participate in our local citizen science project, MK Hogwatch, to help the UK’s favourite spiny mammal, the hedgehog! You will record hedgehog footprints over 5 nights using a survey tunnel in your local Parks Trust park or green space. This project is perfect for families, schools or community groups. We will provide all materials.
Why get involved?
- Hedgehogs have lost much of their natural habitat and food sources, you are now more likely to see one in an urban setting rather than in the countryside. By finding out how well hedgehogs are doing across MK, we can help make our parks more welcoming for them. We can raise awareness of how to create and protect habitats so local populations flourish.
- Your records will be shared with Bucks Environmental Records Centre and this scientific research will make a difference. This information helps form important biodiversity data for National reports such as the recent 2022 State of Hedgehogs report.
How do we get involved?
The survey can be carried out for any 5 consecutive nights of your choosing once the survey period opens. Please register your interest on the form below and we will be in contact with more information on how to collect your equipment and detailed instructions on how to take part. Please note there is a £5 deposit for each hedgehog tunnel that will be refunded once it has been returned.
