Drones Policy
Use of Drones
As the charity that cares for the parks, woodlands and lakes of Milton Keynes, we’re responsible for over 6,000 acres of local green space. With that in mind, we have restrictions and guidelines in place for how drones can operate on land under our ownership to keep local people, visitors, and wildlife safe. We made updates to our policy in Spring 2023 to reflect updates to the approach of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
If you wish to fly a drone on our land, please read our Recreational and Commercial Drone Operator Policy before doing so to ensure you comply with the requirements in place.
Recreational Drone Users
Competent Recreational drone operators are permitted to fly drones from parkland managed by The Parks Trust without prior consent, under the following conditions. Your drone is under 250g, you are registered with the CAA, and you display your Operator ID on the drone. Your drone is over 250g but under 4kg and you hold an A2 Certificate of Competence from a licensed facility.
Flights in the Specific or Certified categories will not be allowed without permission and the production of supporting documentation. It is up to the operator to understand in which sub-category they are operating and ensure they are complying with the criteria. If you are flying the drone to earn money, then you are considered to be a commercial operator and other restrictions apply.
Commercial Drone Users
All commercial drone operators must gain permission from The Parks Trust before flying a drone from Parks Trust land. The operator will need to demonstrate their competence to fly in the correct sub-category by first providing their Operator ID, a risk assessment and evidence of public liability insurance. Permission will not be reasonably withheld for competent operators; however, The Parks Trust reserves the right to deny permission for operational reasons.
Drone Filming & Photography of Events
If you are hosting an event with us and want to capture the moment using a drone, you will still need to apply for a licence. Please submit your request by completing the form at the bottom of our Filming & Photography page.
